CHAPTER 14

SIMON

It has been a few days, and I’m still not over the fact that she’s pregnant.

When she told me, it was like my life flashed before my eyes. I know people say that it happens when someone is about to die. Then again, I’m dying.

I’m taking so many pills just to live normally now, it’s a wonder I’m not high out of my mind at times. But there’s hope. Tory is pregnant and that gives me hope. Maybe everything is going to work out fine.

The thing is, I didn’t realize how stubborn Tory was until she got pregnant. The next day, she told me she had an interview at one of the firms she’d mentioned.

“But you don’t have to work!” I tell her, horrified. When I see her eyes narrow, I backtrack immediately. This isn’t going to work if she gets mad at me. “I mean, don’t you think it’s better if you stay out of the labor force for a while?”

“Actually, I don’t,” she replies, still glaring at me. “What am I going to be doing all day? Twiddling my thumbs and waiting for you to get back home?”

I shake my head. “You need to rest. Rest is good for the baby, and for you. And you can go shopping or…” I wave my hand, shrugging. “Something.”

When our eyes meet again, I take a step back. “You think I’m going to spend the next nine months shopping? I’m pregnant, not sick. I don’t need to rest. Besides, I’ve been reading a lot about pregnancy. I can continue working for as long as my body allows me.”

We continue the argument until she picks up her bag and leaves the house for her interview.

I watch her go, because short of tying her down or locking her up in the house, there’s nothing I can do. And when she gets her job, nothing I say can persuade her to give it up.

I’ve also been adding a lot of things to my plate for the past few weeks. That, on top of the dialysis treatment, and the side effects of the drugs I have to take, makes life rather difficult.

But I need to put a lot of things in order. I must make sure that the company is protected at all costs. I meet with the various boards of directors over the different segments of ArcherMedix.

I have a meeting with my dad, and I tell him that my prognosis is not good.

By the end of the meeting, he looks almost defeated, as if he’s aged ten years. He has always known that things could come to this but telling him makes it even more real.

I watch my father, the strongest man that I know, break down right in front of me.

It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to witness in my life. He understands, of course, when I tell him I need to sign the entire company back to him.

I’ll still work in the position of president and CEO of the company, but he’ll come back.
